Indigenous Gang Reduction Strategies Course – IGRS 23-01R, Tsuut’ina PS

The Professional Development Centre for Indigenous Policing, Canadian Police College will be offering the above noted course on the Tsuut’ina First Nation hosted by the Tsuut’ina Police Service, Alberta.

The dates for the course will run from March 6th – 17th , 2023. Accommodations have been reserved at the Grey Eagle Resort on the Tsuut’ina First Nation.

At present we have 8 registered participants. We have capacity for 24. If we do not have enough registrants we will unfortunately have to cancel the course.

We have set a diary date of Tuesday February 21st to make a final decision if we proceed with the course or not.


Learning outcomes

  • Understanding the underlying causes relating to the growth of Indigenous gangs.
  • Ability to recognize risk and protective factors as they relate to Indigenous youth gang involvement.
  • Understanding how to identify characteristics of Indigenous gangs in Canada.
  • Ability to evaluate integrated police and community approaches to Indigenous gangs.
  • Understanding associated legal considerations.
  • Ability to inform peers, associated agencies, communities, and at-risk youth about Indigenous gangs and integrated approaches.
  • Ability to recognize the significance of community ownership and empowerment in addressing Indigenous gangs.
  • Understanding how to participate in the development of integrated approaches towards Indigenous gangs.

Eligibility and mandatory requirements

  • This course is offered to:
    • police officers who work in communities currently experiencing or expecting to experience Indigenous gang-related activity
    • police officers working in patrol, community or cultural relations, school resources, prevention, suppression, intelligence or analyst units working on Indigenous gang issues
    • civilian analysts employed by police agencies and/or
    • federal and provincial corrections personnel
  • Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College.
