Mental Health Nurse

The Mental Health Nurse position is established to assist the organization in successfully meeting its’ mission of providing culturally sensitive policing services to the UCCM police service area. The Mental Health Nurse partners with a UCCM APS Officer’s to provide secondary response to police directed calls related to mental health. This innovative position provides mobile crisis intervention within the UCCMM service area. The position requires interaction with UCCM APS personnel, external stakeholders, and other agency partners (i.e. Manitoulin Health Centre, Community Health Centres, and Regional Hospitals, etc.).


  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or a diploma in nursing from an accredited educational institution is required;
  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years recent experience in an acute mental health setting required;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a community mental health setting preferred;
  • Experience working with individuals with substance abuse and/or addictions is an asset;
  • Emergency First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HeartSaver training.

SKILLS (Includes but are not limited to)

  • Knowledge of and ability to access community resources;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in clinical assessment and supportive counseling;
  • Demonstrated skill in working with a broad range of client groups, environments using cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Ontario Mental Health Act, Personal Health InformationProtection Act, Health Care Consent Act; familiarity with the Police Services Act;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet multiple deadlines;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and reasonableness in a variety of situations;
  • Proficiency in computer skills to learn and master a variety of specialized software applications and databases used by theservice (Intime, Microsoft Office, and NICHE RMS).

DUTIES (Includes but are not limited to)

  • Provide prompt community based mental health crisis assessment, intervention and referral to the most appropriate hospital or community services and supports;
  • De-escalates crisis situations using best practice principles and guidelines;
  • Liaise with hospital and community resources and supports as needed;
  • Will participate in outreach and liaison with community partners, key stakeholders and identified significant others (e.g.participates in committees and networks related to Mobile Mental Health, educates community about the Mobile MentalHealth program etc.);
  • Supports the Mobile Mental Health Program in case management and debriefing sessions;
  • Refers patient to other agencies or services as needed;
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to assist UCCM APS.


  • A thorough background check will be completed, the background check must be clear before an offer of employment will be given;
  • Completed series of Health Canada approved COVID-19 Vaccination PRIOR to job commencement;
  • A valid Class G driver’s license is required.
