AKWESASNE MOHAWK POLICE SERVICE

Joint Investigative Team
Akwesasne is a community that is situated on the International border between Canada and United States. The Canadian portion of Akwesasne is again dissected by the provincial borders of Ontario and Quebec. Even with the Multi-borders within Akwesasne, the people still believe in one community. As a result of increasing smuggling activities within the territory of Akwesasne of items being smuggled from Canada to the United States and vice-versa, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police formed a Joint Investigative Team in the spring of 2003. This team is comprised of officers from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police and two officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Detective Sergeant Jerry Swamp from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police is the officer in charge of this investigative team. The team works on “project” based investigations as well as interdiction of smuggling activities. Since the team’s inception in March 2003 to April 2005 the Team has seized the following commodities;

  • 970 lbs of Marijuana (estimated value of $3,395,000.00 in U.S. currency)
  • $384,385.00 in U.S. currency
  • $7,000.00 in Canadian currency
  • 1000 cases of contraband cigarettes
  • 47 weapons; restricted and prohibited
  • 23 vehicles (conveyance related)
  • 12 vessels (boats, conveyance related)

D) AMPS is involved in local Career fairs encouraging youth to think about a career in Law Enforcement.

E) Something new we tried this year was getting officers involved in our local winter carnival which they hosted an mini floor hockey tournament which went very well, and they also had a boot hockey challenge in which they played against our local fire department, this was held outdoors on a rink made by the local firefighters at station 3 and we had a beautiful day for the game, community members came out to watch and cheer on their favorite emergency workers and I am glad to say that the AMPS won the game narrowly by one point. The firefighters said they would be ready next year for a re-match. (picture below)

F) D/Sgt. Jerry Swamp with the Joint Investigative Team does community presentations regarding the illegal activities which are affecting our unique reservation, we also send out media releases to inform the community about Phone scams, school bus safety, ATV issues, and Elder abuse.

February 17, 2005 one event at the Akwesasne Winter Carnival was hosted by Akwesasne Racing Against Drugs organizers Tim Thompson and Cpl Al Bennett and was in honor of our elders. This event was named “Elders Night Out,” which included a meal and entertainment. Serving the Elders were Law Enforcement Agencies from Akwesasne and surrounding areas as well as the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.

The dinner was attended by 178 Elders who were treated to a fantastic meal prepared by the Snye Recreation Committee. The Elders enjoyed time sharing stories, playing cards and being entertained by Akwesasne's own comedian Ernestine Oakes, as well as a local Akwesasne Band “The Thundertones”. Many Thank you's were shared with the officers and firemen who attended and helped the Elders enjoy a night out.
